 NIH HEALing Communities Study

NIH and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration launched the HEALing Communities Study (HCS) to investigate how tools for preventing and treating opioid misuse and OUD are most effective at the local level.
The HEALing Communities Study is a four-state (Kentucky, Ohio, New York, and Massachusetts) research project with a goal of reducing opioid overdose deaths in highly affected communities.

Kentucky has one of the highest rates of opioid overdose deaths in the nation.  9 in 10 Kentuckians suffering from substance misuse or a substance use disorder—including opioid use disorder—go untreated.2

In Kentucky, researchers at the University of Kentucky work with 16 communities to leverage existing resources and develop a collaborative model for expanding naloxone distribution, enhancing delivery of MOUD, and improving prescription opioid safety.
